Numbers 15

37 The Lord said to Moses, 38 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘Throughout the generations to come you are to make tassels … so you will remember all the commands of the Lord, that you may obey them and not prostitute yourselves by chasing after the lusts of your own hearts and eyes. 40 Then you will remember to obey all my commands and will be consecrated to your God. 41 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt to be your God. I am the Lord your God.’”

God is saying, “ I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt to be your God. I am the Lord your God.”  You would think He wouldn’t need to remind them, but these verses are to make sure future generations remember just Who is their God.  What does this have to do with prostitution?

In Isaiah 54:5 we read “For your Maker is your husband– the LORD Almighty is his name– the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth”.

So God is calling idolatry prostitution, the same as if a wife cheats on her husband.

This was an topic I really thought about when I became a believer.  I was raised believing in God and praying to Him – but not only to Him.  We also prayed to Mary and the saints.  We believed that we worshipped only God, but were “venerating” the saints.

As I thought about this I wondered about praying mainly to God and just sometimes to the others.

Then I felt the LORD ask me this question.  “If you are faithful to your husband usually and only step out occasionally, are you really faithful to him?  Of course, doing that would not be faithful to my husband!  Praying to anyone but God, having any other god other than Him, is being unfaithful to God.

So, we normally associate worshipping false gods with bowing down and praying to idols.  And that is true, but not the whole picture.  What is a false god?

As I thought about this, ANYTHING OR ANYONE that we trust to ultimately take care of us, give us security, meet our needs, or that we give priority to OVER GOD is a false god.  That can be our children, our spouse, our job, money, football, astrology… anything.

So, again, God tells us, “For your Maker is your husband— the LORD Almighty is his name– the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth”.

God must be FIRST in everything.

Psalm 54:4

“Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me.”

Sounds like God is saying the same thing here too!  AMEN!
