The Why’s for What We Believe

I recently read something that really grabbed my attention. For several hours I searched the web, even using AI, but I could not find the article, but I did find some interesting supporting articles in the process.

When I say it grabbed my attention I mean it was bouncing around in my spirit and soul for days … and nights.  Usually, when that happens, it means that the Lord is trying to get my attention.  Well, He had it… and these things usually turned into a blog or two… But I still couldn’t find the article I’d read.  Thankfully my daughter had seen the same article and saved it.  Thank You, Lord!

In this article, a father, a pastor, who’d done all he knew to raise his daughter in the faith, was heartbroken.  His daughter had gone to Sunday School, was homeschooled through high school, had memorized whole books of the bible and was now a sophomore attending a Christian college.  But now she no longer believed, telling her dad that “faith is intellectually dishonest.” She said her dad had “taught her what to believe but never taught her why any of it is true.”

While I was searching for the article, I did find articles talking about teaching why we believe what we believe.  If our children just learn stories and facts, without the why, the stories blend in with other stories like Cinderella, Lord of the Rings and Pinocchio! And the arguments from teachers, professors, Tiktok, Facebook etc. can erode their faith, and ours!

Do I have all the answers to “why”?  Absolutely not! But I’m going to explore this for a while.

Here are some of the truths we teach our children (and adults) that may need some why’s.

  • There is a God. Why do we believe this?
  • The bible is true, and it is the Word of God. Why do we believe this?
  • Jesus is fully God and fully man. Why was this absolutely necessary?
  • God is Just and He is Good. Bad things happen. Why?

There are absolutely more topics, but this is a start.  So I’m not sure where exactly this is going, but join me on this journey.

Happy New Year!  Praying you’ll have blessed, prosperous year growing closer to Jesus!
